Маленькая прелестная девочка сразу покорила Америку периода Великой депрессии [ Great Depression]. В 1934-39 была одной из самых кассовых голливудских звезд, снимаясь в огромном числе мюзиклов [ musical], мелодрам и комедий: "Маленькая мисс Маркер" ["Little Miss Marker"] (1934), "Маленький полковник" ["The Little Colonel"] (1935), "Самый маленький бунтарь" ["The Littlest Rebel"] (1935), "Бедная маленькая богачка" ["Poor Little Rich Girl"] (1936), "Ямочки" ["Dimples"] (1936), "Крошка Уилли Уинкли" ["Wee Willie Winkie"] (1937), "Хейди" ["Heidi"] (1937), "Маленькая мисс Бродвей" ["Little Miss Broadway"] (1938) "Маленькая принцесса" ["The Little Princess"] (1939) и др. В 1934 получила специальную премию "Оскар" [ Oscar]. Критики отмечали, однако, что роли, в которых она снялась в подростковом и юношеском возрасте, были сыграны слабо и ничем особенным не выделялись. С 1949 прекратила сниматься. В 1970-е стала активисткой Республиканской партии [ Republican Party], занимала ряд важных государственных постов в республиканских администрациях. Уже под своим настоящим именем была членом делегации США на сессии Генеральной Ассамблеи ООН (1969-70), в 1974-76 посол в Гане, в 1976 стала первой женщиной-руководителем протокольного отдела администрации президента Дж.
